Maj. Gen. Michael D. Navrkal, commander of the 35th Infantry Division, has announced Col. Dave Johnson will replace Col. John Andrew as the next chief of staff for the division. Andrew will be deploying in support of Kosovo Force (KFOR) 18 to Pristina, Kosovo, as the military assistant to the chief of staff.
Johnson’s selection was a joint decision of the 35th Division Council made up of the Adjutants General of Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Illinois.
Johnson currently serves as assistant chief of staff for training for the 35th Infantry Division and is responsible for all matters concerning training, operations, plans and readiness. He is also responsible for force development and modernization for the division headquarters.
“Colonel Johnson is an outstanding choice for the chief of staff job,” said Navrkal. “Dave brings tremendous experience both within and outside the division into this key position. I look forward to working with him as the 35th Infantry Division continues its great legacy of service to our nation. We will miss Colonel Andrew as he has been instrumental to the success this division has experienced during his time as chief of staff. I know he’ll continue his fine service in Kosovo.”
“Colonel Johnson brings a wealth of leadership and experience to this position,” said Andrew. “He is an excellent choice for the 35th ID chief of staff.”
“I am honored to be selected to serve the professional Soldiers of the 35th Infantry Division,” said Johnson. “I am excited about the opportunity to continue the long tradition of service to our state and nation as part of the 35th Infantry Division.”
Johnson received his commission from the Kansas Military Academy (Officer Candidate School) on June 16, 1989. He has served in a number of positions in the Kansas Army National Guard as well as the National Guard Bureau.
Johnson has commanded at both the battery and battalion levels. In 2007, Johnson mobilized and deployed to Iraq to command the 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery in support of Joint Task Force 134. Johnson’s most recent assignments at the division headquarters include assistant chief of staff for both plans and training.
Andrew assumed duties as the chief of staff in January 2011. He was commissioned in 1982 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the New Mexico Military Institute. Since that time, Andrew has held numerous positions within the Kansas Army National Guard at increasing levels of responsibility. Prior to serving as the 35th Infantry Division’s chief of staff, Andrew was the chief of staff for the Kansas Army National Guard.
The 35th Infantry Division, headquartered at Fort Leavenworth, is comprised of Soldiers from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Illinois.
